Pavel Antov, a wealthy Russian politician, has died while on vacation in India. As Indian television channel NDTV reported, the 65-year-old was found on Saturday in a pool of blood in front of a hotel in the eastern Indian city of Rayagada. The Russian Consulate General in Calcutta later announced that he had fallen from the third floor of a hotel window.

Fellow traveler died a few days earlier in the same hotel

Antow traveled with a group of four and checked into the hotel last Wednesday. Only a few days before his death, on December 22, the body of another Russian was discovered in a room of the same hotel: Vladimir Budanov is said to have traveled with Antow. According to information from the police, the 61-year-old died of a heart attack.

The Russian Consulate General in Kolkata has contacted police about the two deaths, Russian state news agency Tass reported. There was no evidence of a crime.

Russian authorities have also confirmed Antov’s death. He died under “tragic circumstances,” Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Vyacheslav Kartukhin said in a Telegram message.

Forbes named Antov the richest deputy in Russia

Antov is the founder of the meat company Vladimir Standard and a deputy of Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party. According to the financial newspaper Forbes, in 2019 with an income of 9.97 billion rubles (the equivalent of more than 137 billion euros), he took first place in the ranking of the richest officials and deputies in Russia. Antow is survived by his wife and a daughter.

In June this year, Antov reportedly criticized Moscow’s war of aggression against Ukraine on the internet, describing the Russian missile strikes as “terror”. His entry was later removed from the network. Antow publicly apologized and spoke of a technical error.

In recent months, a series of mysterious deaths of Russian oligarchs have fueled speculation that the Kremlin may take punitive action.
