“We are approaching 100 active Starlinks in Iran,” Musk wrote on Twitter Monday. The billionaire announced in September that he would also offer his satellite internet service in Iran.
Launched in 2020, the Starlink service operates a network of approximately 2,000 satellites intended to provide Internet access in areas not connected to the global network by cable.
Starlink last attracted attention in the spring when company boss Musk sent Starlink devices to Ukraine to provide internet access to areas affected by Russian military strikes.
Iran has been rocked by violent protests for months. They were triggered by the death of young Kurd Mahsa Amini on September 16. The 22-year-old died after being arrested by the vice police because of an improperly worn headscarf.
More than 200 people were killed in the protests, according to Iranian sources. International human rights organizations estimate more than 460 deaths. According to the UN, some 14,000 people have been arrested so far. (sda/afp)
