According to the initial findings, about ten winter sports enthusiasts were buried under an avalanche in Austria on Sunday afternoon. One person has since been rescued with injuries, police said.
The other victims were still being searched for with avalanche detection dogs and helicopters. The avalanche originated around 3 p.m. in the area of the approximately 2700 m high Trittkopf in the Lech and Zürs ski area in Vorarlberg.
According to initial information, more than 100 people were deployed. “We are doing everything we can to save the winter sports enthusiasts,” quotes the “Kleine Zeitung” of those responsible in the municipality of Lech. Searchlights were requested so that the search could continue in the dark.
According to the avalanche warning service, there was significant avalanche danger in the area on Sunday. A few hours earlier there was already an avalanche in the Tyrolean region of Sölden. It was initially feared that a person would be buried under masses of snow. After two and a half hours of searching, everything was safely given. (sda/dpa)
