No trains in the UK at Christmas due to strikes

Traditionally, there is no train traffic on Christmas Day. As the route manager Network Rail has announced, there will also be no trains on Boxing Day due to the strike by the RMT union.

The RMT called for substantial wage increases and better working conditions. The rail providers reject this with the support of the Conservative government.

December 26, known as Boxing Day, is actually one of the busiest days on the UK rail network as many people travel home from family visits. The strike ends on Tuesday morning. But even after that, connections could fail, Network Rail warned Sunday evening. In many places the first trains would start running much later than usual.

Long traffic jams are expected on the roads due to the strike. The AA Motorists Association expects more than 15 million cars to be on the road on Boxing Day. Long-distance bus providers reported a surge in demand.
