Schweizer makes Kiev shine with light art

Yellow doves of peace on a blue background: Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter is currently illuminating a church in Kiev with light art. In doing so, the Swiss brings some light and hope to war-torn people in times of terror and death.

Russian missile strikes have also severely damaged the Ukrainian capital’s power supply. Diesel generators run in the background to power Hofstetter’s alternators.

Portraits of war victims

Whether it’s the north face of the Eiger, the Matterhorn, the Bundeshaus or the Brandenburger Tor, Hofstetter has already transformed many buildings, monuments, landscapes and mountains into works of art with light art projections.

Now his art takes the former banker and helicopter pilot to the war zone. In Kiev, Hofstetter is currently bathing St. Andrew’s Church and other buildings in light. The victims of the war are also commemorated. One of the projections shows portraits of victims, with their first names and age at death.

Christmas art tour

Hofstetter is organizing a Christmas art tour in Kiev from 23 to 25 December. In addition to churches, it also illuminates residential buildings, museums and universities with Christmas motifs, as announced by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. (kes)
