“Taliban measures aimed at excluding women from public life will affect the way our countries deal with the Taliban,” said the statement, also released by the Swiss foreign ministry on Wednesday evening.
The statement is therefore supported by the EU foreign policy representative and the foreign ministers of twelve countries, including all G7 countries.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced on Twitter that not only women, but the entire population suffered from the Taliban’s devastating decisions. Switzerland shows solidarity with the women, men and children of Afghanistan. Human rights are non-negotiable.
On Tuesday, the Taliban immediately banned women from all universities in Afghanistan. It was a “black day for Afghanistan,” according to the Swiss foreign ministry. Following the decision, Swiss ambassador Heinrich Schellenberg stated on Twitter that the Taliban should not complain about the brain drain while excluding half of the population from education, business, social and political participation.
Since the takeover of power in August 2021, the Islamists in Afghanistan have massively curtailed women’s rights. Girls and women are largely excluded from public life.
“The Taliban’s repressive measures against Afghan girls and women were ruthless and systemic,” the ministers criticized. This policy clearly shows the Taliban’s contempt for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Afghan people.
