Congress clears way for early elections in Peru British ambulance drivers on strike: ‘Don’t end up in the emergency room’

After weeks of protests against the impeachment of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, the South American country’s Congress has cleared the way for early elections. Parliament voted on Tuesday with a large majority in favor of a constitutional amendment that would bring forward the 2026 presidential and congressional elections to April 2024. The reform still needs to be approved at second reading with a two-thirds majority. Interim chairman Dina Boluarte supported the initiative.

At the beginning of this month, then-president Castillo wanted to prevent a vote of no confidence and he dissolved the congress. Parliament subsequently removed him from office. He was arrested on charges of attempted coup and was remanded in custody. The supporters of the former village school teacher then took to the streets and about two dozen people were killed in clashes with the police. (saw/sda/dpa)
