Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) has asked his country’s security forces to do more in all areas. “Today we have a dynamically changing situation in the world, new risks and threats are placing higher demands on the entire security system of Russia,” he said in a video address on Tuesday evening (local time).
“And that means they, the security authorities, need to step up their efforts, especially in the critical directions.” The reason for the speech was the so-called Day of the Security Forces of Russia.
“Protection” for illegally annexed territories
One of the main tasks of the security forces is to protect the citizens of Russia’s “new regions”. This meant that the parts of Ukraine annexed by Moscow were in violation of international law. In fact, the situation in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions is difficult, Putin stressed.
“But the people who live there, all citizens of Russia, hope for their protection.” To protect the safety, rights and freedoms of these people, Russia will equip new units with the latest technology and weapons, as well as experienced personnel, according to Putin.
Russia has forcibly captured and occupied large parts of these areas in its war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on since February, and is now trying to defend them against Ukrainian counter-attacks.
Fight against foreign spies
Putin also called on the security forces to take more decisive action against the activities of foreign intelligence services. Above all, maximum determination of military counterintelligence is required here.
“The actions of foreign secret services must be suppressed immediately,” the Kremlin chief said. Traitors, saboteurs and spies must be caught. (SDA/euc)
