The German weather service (DWD) warned of widespread black ice at the beginning of the week. The DWD announced that the foothills of the low south of Iceland initially expanded westward and then also eastward during Monday. Ice cold rain comes in here. After that, gradually milder air prevailed. The DWD warned of impediments to road and rail traffic from the storm. Roads and railways may become impassable in some places.
Parts of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hesse, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Bavaria are affected.
In several regions, classes will be canceled on Monday due to the black ice: the responsible authorities have, among other things, canceled classes at all general and vocational schools in the Hanover region and in the Osnabrück district. Primary and secondary schools in the Göttingen district will also remain closed on Monday. (AFP/jmh)
