According to media reports, the US Capitol storming committee is set to vote on whether to recommend the Justice Department investigate former US President Donald Trump.
Monday’s vote centers on the criminal offenses of rioting, conspiracy against the US government and obstruction of a public trial, “Politico” and the ABC News station reported Friday, citing unnamed sources. While a recommendation from the committee would not be legally binding on the ministry, it could influence the decision-making process that could ultimately lead to an indictment.
For the past nearly 18 months, the commission has investigated how supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the seat of the US Congress on January 6, 2021, in which Trump’s election defeat by Joe Biden would be confirmed. A mob incited by Trump violently entered the building, killing five people. In the course of the investigation, the 76-year-old was heavily accused by witnesses. The final report of the committee will be published on Wednesday.
Trump has been targeted by various US prosecutors in a number of cases. The Justice Department is also investigating criminal offenses related to the storming of the Capitol, but has not yet taken personal action against Trump. (sda/dpa)
