Former Prime Minister Johnson talks himself rich – 315,000 francs per speech Peru declares state of emergency throughout the country due to unrest

Boris Johnson has been lecturing around the world since he stepped down as British Prime Minister. It pays off: so far he has received more than CHF 1.14 million in fees.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made a huge amount of money as a public speaker since his resignation. According to the register of British MPs, updated on Wednesday, Johnson has already collected more than £1 million in fees since his departure in September.

Known for his florid rhetoric, Johnson was paid between £215,000 and £277,000 per speech, according to a Members’ Register of Financial Concerns from parliament. In recent months, Johnson spoke with bankers and insurance companies in the United States and at a conference organized by the American television channel CNN.

Johnson resigned in July amid a series of scandals after about three years in office. However, he remains a British Conservative MP in London’s House of Commons.

Following the resignation of his successor Liz Truss after only a few weeks in office, Johnson briefly attempted a spectacular political comeback in October. Conservative MPs instead supported former finance minister and current prime minister Rishi Sunak.

Hourly wage of 36,500 francs

A few months ago, news of Johnson’s speeches made headlines: it became public that he had received the equivalent of about 310,000 francs for a speech he gave in the US in October.

Johnson stated in the registry that he had worked a total of 8.5 hours on the day of the performance in Colorado. This brings him to an hourly wage of CHF 36,500. He and two members of his team were also paid for travel and accommodation expenses.
