Normally, the climate activists are quickly removed from the streets – even if they stick to the asphalt. That was also the case in the German city of Mainz on Friday morning. Activists of the group “Last Generation” blocked an important road.
A demonstrator (38) apparently pressed too hard on the glue tube. The police could not release his right hand. The special glue, a mixture of sand and instant glue, held firmly. So the city’s construction workers had to move – with heavy equipment. Part of the road has been carved out with a rotary hammer, SWR reports. According to the city of Mainz, the street was repaired immediately after the activist and his hand were cut out.
The “Last Generation” went on to publish several photos of the action, including one of the activist holding his concrete hand to the camera, looking less than happy.
The group actually wanted to draw attention to the protest and how seriously they take it. But instead of encouragement, there is now a lot of ridicule. The activist with the concrete hand was nicknamed “Teerminator” on Twitter. “Next time tape the head,” reads one comment. Another writes: “Louis Concrete Glove”.
He did not need to be taken to a hospital
But some also wondered how the poor man would fare. Some even suspected that an amputation would be necessary. Even though things looked bad by his own statement, the activist got the “stuff” without help, he assures the “SWR”. The hand is now free again. He did not require hospitalization or any other special treatment. Before the action, he knew what he was getting into.
The sticky protest caused a major traffic jam in the morning, the fire brigade and police were deployed to divert traffic and get the activists off the street. It is still unclear whether the costs will be charged to the climate group.
Raid on action at oil refinery
Regardless of this action, several members of the “Last Generation” were searched on Tuesday. They are accused of forming or supporting a criminal organization, a spokesman for the Neuruppin public prosecutor told AFP news agency. Eleven objects were hit, including one in Brandenburg. The group strongly criticized the searches and made it clear that they wanted to continue their actions.
The starting point of the measure was protests in April at the PCK Schwedt oil refinery, according to the public prosecutor. In Schwedt, among other things, sliders were closed. There were no arrests. It will be determined because of the charge of disruption of public services. (jmh/AFP)
