Trains to Machu Picchu suspended

The decision was due to situations beyond the company’s control and should prioritize the safety of passengers and employees, it said.

The ruins of Machu Picchu are one of the top tourist attractions in South America and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The city was built by the Incas in the 15th century, consists of about 200 buildings and receives thousands of visitors every day. The main access to Machu Picchu is by train from Cusco. Several organizations announced protests in the city. Operations at the airport were also suspended.

According to the Peruvian news agency Andina, train traffic was also halted on other routes in the south and southeast of Peru. The region, which is mainly regarded as a stronghold of ex-president Castillo and his supporters, has seen violent protests and clashes between protesters and police in recent days. This is how demonstrators entered the airport of Arequipa.

But also in Lima and other cities, thousands of people demanded the resignation of Castillo’s successor Dina Boluarte, the closure of parliament, early new elections and the release of the ex-president, who is in custody. Human rights ombudswoman Eliana Revollar spoke on Monday of seven deaths in two days, including two minors.
