The East Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail has received a large order from the Kazakhstan Railways. Stadler will supply and maintain 537 sleeping and couchette cars.
The order is worth 2.3 billion euros, Stadler announced on Tuesday evening. In addition to vehicle construction, the framework agreement also includes a 20-year maintenance contract.
Stadler is also taking over a local production facility in Astana with approximately 100 employees. The transfer of technology to the Kazakh capital and the training of local personnel in other Stadler plants must be gradual.
Stadler Rail had recently almost completely closed its large factory in Belarus as a result of the sanctions imposed due to the war in Ukraine. Production was completely moved to other countries, such as Poland.
According to the communiqué, delivery of the sleeping and couchette cars to Kazakh Railways is planned by 2030. There is also an option for additional orders to further modernize the country’s rail fleet. (saw/sda/awp)
