The Iranian regime has sentenced former professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azdani to death for participating in anti-government protests and for improving women’s rights in Iran. Nasr-Azdani played in his active career for Iranian clubs Rah Ahan and Tractor in the Persian Gulf Pro League. He was once part of the national youth team of Iran, but his career was cut short by multiple knee injuries.
The football association FIFPRO was “shocked and appalled” by the Iranian regime’s decision and called for the immediate revocation of the verdict. “We show our solidarity with Amir and demand that the sentence be withdrawn,” the union said in a statement.

Two young men have already been executed in Iran in recent days. Iranian football legend Ali Daei also faces sanctions. The regime has forcibly closed a shop and restaurant it owns for supporting protests in the country.
According to media reports, at least 25 protesters are on the death list of the Iranian judiciary, including children.
The reason for the nationwide protests was the death of the Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested by vice squad for violating Islamic dress code. (abu/yam/sda)
