An estimated 2.2 million gallons of crude oil spills, activists say, would be the largest disaster of its kind in the United States since 2013.
The hole in the pipeline was discovered on Wednesday and oil, among other things, flowed into a river. TC Energy immediately shut down the pipeline. According to environmental protection authorities, further investigations were carried out on Friday into the cause of the oil spill. To prevent environmental pollution, among other things, an earth bank was heaped up in the affected river.
The pipeline transports crude oil from Canada to the US, where it is processed into fuel and other oil products. Oil companies and environmentalists have long discussed expanding the oil pipeline known as the Keystone XL. US President Joe Biden canceled the expansion project shortly after his inauguration in January 2021.
