German local politician clings to the lectern – and gives an impassioned speech German local politician clings to the lectern – and gives an impassioned speech

The climate protest has reached the city parliament of Cologne. The mayor responded calmly.
An article from

During the parliamentary session in Cologne, an MP clung to the lectern. Nicolin Gabrysch, councilor of the climate friends, spoke on Thursday evening about the heat action plan of the city of Cologne and stuck to the end of her speech. The politician explained:

“This cannot and must not continue. That’s why I’m now making sure, at least here and now, that things don’t go on as usual, but at least a little different from normal.”

As a “politician, mother and orphans on this planet,” she was “very desperate,” Gabrysch said.

Because the council members had already been in session for several hours at the time, their speech initially received little attention. Also, no one noticed that while she was talking she opened a tube of superglue and spread the contents on her left hand.

The actions of the “climate stickers” are not radical or criminal, Gabrysch explained, but a “legitimate way of democratic protest”. The “passivity and refusal of politics” is irresponsible given the dramatic dangers of climate change. She therefore wanted to send a signal at this point “that things are not going as usual here”.

The mayor of Cologne reacts confidently

As the climate list Germany announced, they acted “in solidarity with climate activists, especially those of the last generation”. Gabrysch voluntarily leaves the Cologne city council. Because the members of the Climate Friends group want to rotate their offices, Gabrysch took the podium for the last time on Thursday.

When Gabrysch got stuck, mayor Henriette Reker (independent) pointed out that a second lectern was available. A spokesman for the city said the meeting was briefly adjourned. Gabrysch got solvent. After a few minutes she was back in her regular chair and the session continued.

The AfD faction had heavily criticized Reker after the break. She accused Reker of ignoring the incident as chair of the meeting and called for a fine or a warrant to be imposed. Reker refers to the rules and continues the meeting.
