A family of Wikileaks founder Assange relies on “silent diplomacy”

20-year-old Mexican Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez is about to give birth to her first child when she meets a woman who had offered her used baby clothes for free on social media.

The fact

Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez and her husband live in poverty. The mason earns between 300 and 500 pesos (15 to 19 francs) per day. The young woman searches social media for cheap baby clothes. So she comes into contact with a woman who wants to give her used clothes.

The two women set a date for November 30, 2022 in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez, who is eight months pregnant, sets out alone to meet the internet acquaintance.

Then she disappears.

On the same day, the family reports Rosa missing. At the same time, they go in search of the pregnant woman. “We looked for her in hospitals because we thought she had some complications,” the nurse recalled.

But the search remains in vain.

Days later, Mexican police found the body of Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez as part of the investigation.

A video allegedly alerted police to a couple dragging the young woman into a truck. It is said that it was the woman with whom Rosa arranged to change clothes.

The couple was arrested with a newborn baby in their possession, according to the attorney general’s office, and brought before a judge.

The motive

According to Mexican authorities, the couple cut open the young woman’s abdomen to “steal” her unborn child because she could not have children of her own. This is reported by an official from the AFP news agency.

The alleged perpetrators have been arrested and are in custody.

The judgement

The suspects are charged with kidnapping and femicide. Femicide is the killing of women because of their gender. The attorney general said the couple could face up to 30 years in prison.

The verdict is still pending.

The newborn who has to grow up without a mother

According to authorities, the newborn is doing well. It has now been handed over to the father.

Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez is buried in the municipality of Paso de Ovejas, Veracruz. Friends and relatives paid tribute to the deceased and told the Mexican newspaper Presencia that she was so looking forward to motherhood and that her daughter should be named Lía.
