There is growing evidence of the early release of former German tennis star Boris Becker from British custody. The British newspaper “Mirror” reported on Tuesday that the three-time Wimbledon winner must be deported to Germany next week.
As early as mid-November, the Sun tabloid, citing a judicial source, wrote that the 55-year-old would probably be released before Christmas and would then have to leave immediately for his homeland. Becker’s German lawyer was initially unavailable for comment.
According to reports in the British media, the former top athlete should benefit from an accelerated procedure. According to this, any foreign prisoner who can be released from prison and deported up to twelve months before the earliest release date is eligible. This should relieve the pressure on overcrowded British prisons. Becker, who hails from Baden-Württemberg, has lived in London for many years, but has no British citizenship.
The former top athlete was sentenced to two and a half years in prison at the end of April for withholding millions in assets from his bankruptcy receivers. He has been in Huntercombe Prison, west of London, for several months. (aeg/sda/dpa)
