A day earlier, people had left the coast of the North African civil war country Libya in their overcrowded dinghy. At the end of last week, the MSF crew reached their area of operations in the Mediterranean Sea with the “Geo Barents”.
Time and time again, the volunteers there rescue migrants in distress at sea on their way to the EU. The German ships “Humanity 1” and “Louise Michel” are currently on a sea rescue mission in the area off the coast of Libya and Tunisia. Usually they take the rescued to Italy. However, the right-wing government in Rome wants to prevent this. This led to a diplomatic dispute with Germany and France a few weeks ago, when several rescue vessels were at sea off the coast of Sicily awaiting the allocation of a port by the Italian authorities.
