For both TGV high-speed trains and regional trains, only four out of ten trains were running, an SNCF spokesperson confirms to AFP news agency.
The approximately 10,000 inspectors are not only responsible for checking tickets, but also for the safety of passengers. Therefore, the trains cannot run without them.
An SNCF spokesperson announced a “gradual return to normal” for the last day of the strike on Monday. Three of the four TGV trains should then run again. Train traffic should be back to normal from Tuesday.
A collective had called for the strike and several trade unions supported the protest movement. To increase the pressure on the SNCF shortly before the upcoming salary negotiations, the unions are already warning of strikes during the Christmas and New Year weekends. The SNCF management announced new meetings with unions and inspectors.
