At the Asian Championships, Iranian climber Elnas Rekabi performed without a headscarf – becoming an icon of the protest movement. Now the mullah regime is punishing her family.

The childhood home of Iranian climber and protest icon Elnas Rekabi was demolished by the mullahs’ regime. At least that is what the Iranian news agency Tasnim reports. According to this, however, the demolition was not retaliation against Recabi, but was carried out due to the lack of a building permit.

Rekabi attracted worldwide attention in September when she competed without a headscarf in the Asian Championships in South Korea. In her home country of Iran, women are required to wear a headscarf and so the removal of the scarf was interpreted as a protest against the reactionary regime of the mullahs.

A video circulating on social networks is said to show the demolition of the house. According to unconfirmed information, Rekabi’s brother Davood has posted the recording online. According to media reports, Rekabi herself was placed under house arrest after her return from the Asian Championships. Although she never confirmed that her waiving of the headscarf was a sign of protest and even apologized and spoke of an “accident”, the 33-year-old became a figurehead of the demonstrators in Iran representing the radical demands of religious regimes.
