There are three candidates in the running: MPs Eric Ciotti and Aurélien Pradié, and Senate Majority Leader Bruno Retailleau.
Electronic voting will continue until 6 p.m. Sunday. The results must be announced immediately. According to the party, the turnout on Saturday at 8 p.m. was already 24 percent.
In the absence of a poll, predictions are difficult, even though 2021 primary finalist Eric Ciotti is the favourite. He received support from Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and former party leader.
But Bruno Retailleau can also count on a long list of supporters. Aurélien Pradié is younger than his two rivals and is generally less conservative, but unlikely to rise above outsider status.
The new president, who will succeed Christian Jacob, will have the difficult task of rebalancing the party between French President Emmanuel Macron’s party and the extreme right, the Rassemblement National. The Republican presidential candidate Valérie Pécresse failed miserably in the last election (4.8 percent of the vote). (up/down)
