Next stop: 2036 Olympics? After the World Cup, Qatar apparently wants to sign up for the next major sporting event. The British “Guardian” and various German media report this. A source familiar with the application process has responded accordingly.
Qatar had already applied to host the Summer Olympics three times, including those in 2016 and 2020. However, previous applications have also been rejected due to skepticism that such a small country has the necessary infrastructure to host an event, according to The Guardian which hosts 10,500 athletes in 32 sports and attracts millions of spectators.
But concerns about the heat also meant the desert state never made it to the final round of the selection process.
As the German news agency Reuters writes, the Qataris are expected to propose a later date in the year, similar to the World Cup now.
In 2019, the emirate was already successful when the World Championships in Athletics could be organized. But even though the athletes didn’t start until late September and early October, there were several problems due to the heat. Due to the extreme heat, the women’s marathon was held at night. Yet only 40 of the 68 participants made it to the finish and 30 even had to be medically examined.
“The success of the World Cup so far puts Qatar in a strong position – they have shown they can do it. It is proof of the concept,” the anonymous source said, according to Reuters. Now the whole infrastructure is there: “the stadiums, the subway, the new airport,” said the source.
“The whole infrastructure is there – the stadiums, the subway, the new airport,” it says.
Other countries expected to bid for the 2036 Games include India, Indonesia and Turkey. The next Olympics will be in Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032. (lacquer)
