Patient turns off bed neighbor’s oxygen device

A 72-year-old has been arrested for allegedly turning off her fellow patient’s oxygen device in a hospital in Mannheim. The 79-year-old bed neighbor was dependent on the mechanical oxygen supply, police and prosecutors said Thursday. Nevertheless, the suspect even turned off the device twice on Tuesday evening because she was bothered by the noise.

After the first shutdown around 8 p.m., she was told by staff that the oxygen supply was vital for her neighbor. Yet she pressed the main switch again a moment later. With fatal consequences: The 79-year-old had to be resuscitated. Although she is now out of danger, she is still in the intensive care unit, it said.

The 72-year-old is suspected of attempted murder. On Wednesday she was brought before the investigating judge, since then she has been in pretrial detention instead of in the hospital room. (lrc/AFP)
