The mayor of New York wants to force the mentally ill homeless to continue fighting crime in the American metropolis. “If a serious mental illness leaves someone homeless and is a danger to themselves, we have a moral obligation to help them,” Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.
Police, medical professionals and social workers must therefore in future be able to take in homeless people against their will who they suspect have psychological problems. According to Adams, a corresponding legal regulation will be discussed next year.
“The common misconception that we can’t provide involuntary help unless the person is violent (…) persists,” Adams said. “This myth must be dispelled.” There are an estimated 50,000 homeless people in New York City.
Adams, a former police officer and Democratic Party representative of US President Joe Biden, has made fighting violent crime one of his top priorities. (sda/afp)
