Basejumper dies in France after jumping off 200m bridge “Marriage for all” in United States before breakthrough

In the south of France, an extreme athlete has died after jumping from a 200-meter high highway bridge.

The parachute of the 32-year-old so-called base jumper apparently did not open on Tuesday when he jumped from the Millau viaduct, broadcaster France 3 reported. The man died on the spot. The exact circumstances of the accident are yet to be determined.

BASE jumping is skydiving from tall buildings, aerials, bridges or rocks. Some daredevils also wear a wing suit, a so-called wing suit.

Since extreme sportsmen often jumped from the spectacular highway bridge at Millau, this has been expressly prohibited since the summer and repeat offenders risk a fine of 150 euros. Several BASE jumpers per day recently dared to jump off the bridge.

In response to the ban, base jumpers had launched a petition aiming to reach an agreement with the Eiffage motorway manager, France 3 reported. The Millau viaduct is the highest bridge in Europe. (aeg/sda/dpa)
