Bahraini activist Abdul Hadi al-Khawajah, who is already serving a life sentence in the Gulf Kingdom, has been sentenced again. His family announced this on Monday evening.
The new conviction concerns insulting a prison employee. According to his family, there were also other allegations against him for allegedly “insulting a foreign state”. According to his family, he had no legal representation at the court hearing.
Al-Khavaja, who is also a Danish national, was one of the leaders of a protest movement in Bahrain during the Arab uprisings in 2011. The Sunni government, with the support of Saudi Arabia, eventually crushed the protests, which were led by the Shiite majority in the country. Al-Khawajah and other opposition members were convicted and imprisoned for attempted subversion.
Khawajah’s daughter called on Denmark and the European Union to break their silence on the matter and demand that Bahrain unconditionally release her father. The human rights organization Human Rights Watch recently warned that al-Khawajah’s condition had worsened after “severe physical, sexual and mental torture”. He was also denied medical treatment during his detention. (aeg/sda/dpa)
