“Marriage for all” in the US for the Ukraine breakthrough: Moscow has to pay for the consequences of the war – the nightly update without photos

The United States has taken a major step toward protecting same-sex marriage through federal law. This Tuesday, the Senate will vote on a bill that enshrines same-sex marriage in law. The Senate brought the draft to the finish line on Monday.

Also, enough Republicans voted in a trial ballot with Democratic senators to pass the law.

President Joe Biden’s Democrats need support from the Republican camp in the Congressional chamber. If the Senate passes the proposed legislation, it would be a major victory for the Democrats.

In addition, the House of Representatives must vote again on the draft due to changes in the text of the law. The chamber had actually already voted in favor of the text with an impartial majority in the summer. If the MPs there agree again, which is very likely, President Biden can sign the law into law.

His Democrats will hold the majority in the House of Representatives until the end of the year. In the next legislature, Republicans will have limited control of the chamber due to seat gains in the recent midterm elections. Democrats must hurry to get major legislative projects through.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States by a 2015 Supreme Court decision that declared unconstitutional a 1996 law that established marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

However, concerns arose this year when the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court overturned the 1970s Supreme Court ruling on abortion rights. One of the judges, arch-conservative lawyer Clarence Thomas, placed the same-sex marriage decision in a series of rulings that the court must reconsider. (sda/dpa)
