More than 300 dead after severe earthquake Indonesia “Down with Xi Jinping!”: Protests against corona measures in China

Almost a week after the strong earthquake in Indonesia, the number of victims continues to rise. The National Civil Defense put the number of dead on Sunday at 321. Eleven people are still missing, chief Suharyanto said. The magnitude 5.6 quake destroyed more than 62,000 homes and housed more than 73,000 people in emergency shelters.

The earthquake hit the main island of Java last Monday. The epicenter was near the city of Cianjur, about 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta. Because the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of ten kilometers on land, the damage was correspondingly large. Java is extremely densely populated. “The aid workers are gradually reaching the affected residents in the remote villages with food and supplies and setting up tents for them,” Suharyanto said.

The island nation of Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on Earth. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there. (sda/dpa)
