China donates $ 100 million to Cuba against economic crisis Saudis intervene: CS general assembly approves capital increase of 4 billion

China is helping Cuba, which is in a severe economic crisis due to the corona pandemic, with a donation of about USD 100 million.

Chinese President Xi Jinping handed over the donation to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the end of his visit to China, Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Alejandro Gil said Saturday.

Xi and Díaz-Canel met on Friday, Gil told Cuban state television. The money will be spent on “priorities,” said Gil, who is also Commerce Secretary. Cuba is currently suffering the worst economic crisis in three decades.

Díaz-Canel is on one of his rare trips abroad, which will take him to Turkey and Russia, among others. He is looking for support to renew the outdated energy supply that keeps collapsing and causing power outages.

According to Gil, the two heads of state also discussed Cuba’s debt to China. He gave no information about the amount. “We are looking at mutually acceptable debt planning and restructuring formulas,” Gil said. China is Cuba’s second largest trading partner after Venezuela. Both countries are close allies of the government in Havana. (sda/afp)
