The capital’s BER airport has temporarily suspended flight operations due to an action by climate activists. A spokesman for Berlin Airport announced this to the German press agency on Thursday. The “Last Generation” group activists reportedly came to the airport grounds in two places, both on the north and south sides.

Therefore, both slopes are now closed. Initially, the airport had not reported any restrictions on flight operations. However, the situation on the ground has since changed, the spokesperson said.

Federal police confirmed that several people were on the airport grounds. There was no more detailed information, the operation is still ongoing.

The activists streamed the action live on Twitter. There, shortly after 4 p.m., they could be seen jumping through a fence and entering the airport grounds. They then held banners in front of the camera and explained their motives. It was also shown how activists are chained to the ground. About ten minutes after the action started, blue lights could be seen in the live stream and a little later police officers could also be heard.

From 5.30 pm the first delayed flights were reported on the BER homepage. The Flightradar website also showed that individual aircraft were circling not far from BER or that aircraft with earlier departure times were still grounded. (sda/dpa)
