Following his defeat in the November 2020 presidential election, former President Donald Trump asked Pence to block formal confirmation of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in Congress. However, Pence, who had been loyal to Trump until then, had declined.
On January 6, 2021, as Biden’s election victory was due to be ratified by Congress, radical Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. The storming of the Congressional seat with five deaths caused horror around the world.
Pence described Trump’s actions as “reckless” on January 6, 2021. However, he declined to answer questions from a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the incident.
Attorney General Merrick Garland last week hired an independent special counsel to handle the ongoing Trump investigation. He will lead part of the investigation into the storming of the Capitol and decide whether to make official charges against Trump.
Observers think Pence is considering a Republican presidential nomination in 2024. However, so far he has not officially commented on this. Trump announced last week that he would run again in the 2024 presidential election. (con/sda/afp)
