Italian police have arrested nearly 50 suspected mafiosi in a crackdown on organized crime. The 49 people are suspected of having links with the Calabrian mafia ‘Ndrangheta, the police said on Tuesday.
The suspects allegedly traded drugs and extorted and threatened people, the authorities further charged those arrested. “I’m coming to your house today and I’m going to beat you to death, you understand?” was heard in a wiretapped phone call released by police.
The aim of the operation was to destroy the ‘Ndrangheta branch in Rho, northwest of Milan’s city center, several media outlets reported. A convicted mobster who had already served his sentence wanted to rebuild the group there.
The Italian authorities regularly act against the various mafia organizations on the boot and islands of the Mediterranean country. The mafiosi earn their money from illegal trade, such as drug trafficking or construction.
In Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, the gendarmerie (Carabinieri) and the financial police (Guardia di Finanza) seized assets from three area real estate and hotel entrepreneurs with an estimated value of 40 million euros on Tuesday. According to the investigation, two of them obtained their entrepreneurial position with the help of the local ‘Ndranggehta clans. (aeg/sda/dpa)
