The capsule will be on its way to its orbit around the moon on Monday flew past the satellite of the Earth at a distance of about 130 kilometers, said the American space agency NASA. She won’t get any closer to the moon for the rest of her flight.
“The mission is progressing as planned,” NASA manager Mike Sarafin said at a news conference a few hours later. The unmanned capsule would be underway for about three weeks before it is expected to return to Earth.
The mission “Artemis 1” took off early last week for a first test launch after months of delays. The Orion capsule was launched with the Space Launch System rocket from the Cape Canaveral cosmodrome in the US state of Florida.
The mission has not scored well so far: after delays and exploding costs in development and construction, the start of the test had to be postponed several times. With the ‘Artemis’ program, named after the Greek goddess of the moon, American astronauts should land on the moon again in the coming years, including a woman and a non-white for the first time.
