Italian President Sergio Mattarella will visit Switzerland at the end of November for a state visit. The two-day visit includes official talks with four federal councilors and a visit to ETH Zurich.
The 81-year-old Mattarella will be in Switzerland on November 29 and 30, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday. He is Italy’s twelfth president since February 2015. The last time an Italian head of state visited Switzerland was Giorgio Napolitano in 2014.
Mattarella is received with military honors by the Federal Council in Bern. On the first day of the visit, official talks are planned in the Bernerhof with the Federal President and head of the FDFA, Ignazio Cassis, with the Federal Councilors Simonetta Sommaruga (UVEK) and Viola Amherd (DDPS), and with the Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin.
According to the FDFA, the agenda includes bilateral relations between Switzerland and Italy, the security situation in Europe against the background of the war in Ukraine, European policy and the work of the UN Security Council.
On the second day, the state visit will focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Cassis and his guest visit the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.
About 320,000 Italians live in Switzerland. This makes them the largest community of foreigners. In addition, more than 80,000 cross-border commuters commute to work in Switzerland every day. Italy is Switzerland’s third most important trading partner, with a total trade volume of more than CHF 34 billion in 2021. (sda)
