After the missile hit Polish territory, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy doubted it was a projectile from his armed forces. “I think it was a Russian missile – based on the confidence I have in the military reports,” Zelenskyy said Wednesday. According to Ukrainian data, one of 25 Russian missile attacks in western Ukraine coincided with the impact in Poland.
However, it is currently believed in the West that it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile used to defend against attacks by the Russian army. Immediately after the explosion in the NATO country, which killed two people, the media initially spoke on Tuesday evening about a possible Russian missile.
Regardless of whose arsenal the missile came from, many international observers agree that Russia, with its war of aggression against Ukraine, is ultimately responsible for the impact in Poland.
Zelenskyy further called for the involvement of Ukrainian specialists in the investigation to clarify the incident. «All our information is fully available. We gave them to our partners from the night, from the first hours, when the world started to find out what had happened,” Zelenskyy said in his daily video address. At the same time, Ukrainian experts need access to the information collected on the ground.
The current developments around the war in Ukraine in the live ticker:
The US government ultimately blames Russia for the deadly missile attack in Poland – even though it is confirmed that the explosion was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile. “The world knows that Russia bears ultimate responsibility for this incident,” US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in Washington.
“Ukraine had – and has – every right to defend itself,” said a National Security Council spokeswoman. Russia is responsible because it has launched masses of missiles, especially on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Federal Secretary of State Annalena Baerbock argued the same. “These people would not have died if it had not been for a brutal Russian war of aggression,” Baerbock said after her arrival at the world climate conference in Egypt.
US Chief of Staff Mark Milley unsuccessfully tried to contact his Russian counterpart Valery Gerasimov after the missile hit Poland. All attempts by his staff to reach the chief of staff have failed, Milley said in Washington. However, he was able to speak several times with Ukrainian army chief Valery Saluschnyj and other European generals.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the parliament extended martial law and the mobilization of the army for another 90 days. The two measures will initially apply until February 19, 2023, local media report. Many experts see the duration of the state of war as an indicator of how long Kiev is currently preparing for fighting.
More than eight years after the downing of passenger flight MH17 with 298 deaths, the criminal court in the Netherlands will rule on four alleged perpetrators on Thursday. The suspects – three Russians and a Ukrainian – were high-ranking pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and, according to the prosecutor, allegedly obtained the missile that shot down the plane.
