Trump Candidate Expected – US Republicans Regroup Ex-Vice Pence Against Trump: “There Are Better Alternatives”

After the US Republicans performed significantly weaker than expected in the parliamentary elections, the party is regrouping. In the House of Representatives, where only a small Republican majority is at stake, there could be a fight for the presidency of the chamber.

Meanwhile, several candidates for the 2024 presidential election are positioning themselves in the party. Ex-President Donald Trump plans to make a “special announcement” Wednesday evening (9:00 p.m. local time/3:00 a.m. CET).

US President Joe Biden’s Democrats have held a narrow majority in both chambers of Congress since 2021. In the election a week ago, they managed to defend control of the Senate. In the House of Representatives, on the other hand, Republicans are about to take over the majority. TV channels see her only a few seats away from the necessary 218 mandates, according to the AP news agency, only one vote is missing. The expected landslide victory for the Republicans did not materialize.

Trump candidacy expected

With increasing vehemence, Trump, who served as US president from 2017 to 2021, fueled speculation that he might run again. Shortly before the US midterm elections last week, he spoke of a “very big message” he would soon spread. The ex-president is expected to announce his intention to run again in the 2024 presidential election at an event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden. To this day, however, he refuses to admit defeat. He claims to have been robbed of victory by mass electoral fraud, but has never provided any proof. In addition, Trump is embroiled in legal disputes on multiple fronts that could be dangerous for him.

To actually be his party’s official candidate, Trump would have to assert himself in the party’s internal primaries. After his party’s poor performance in the US midterm elections, for which Trump is partly responsible, his starting position has deteriorated. In the United States, a person can serve two terms in office, consecutive or not. Trump would be 78 years old in just over two years.

Ex-Vice Pence Positions Himself

Former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are potential Republican competitors. Democrat and US President Joe Biden wants to decide early next year whether he wants to run for a second term. He came out of last week’s general election strengthened after the debacle predicted by many polls for Democrats failed to materialize.

In an interview broadcast on ABC TV Monday (local time), ex-Vice Pence made it clear that he is considering running for president at the White House. He also showed himself ready to fight against his former companion Trump. Ultimately, the American people must decide whether Trump can become president again. But he thinks there will be better alternatives in the future.

At the same time, Pence took the opportunity to again distance yourself from his former boss. The ABC interview showed how Trump’s behavior during his supporters’ attack on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021 led to the vice president’s split from the president. Trump’s statements and behavior at the time were dangerous, Pence said. “It was clear that he decided to be part of the problem.”

battle for leadership positions

In the House of Representatives, where only a small Republican majority looms, there could be a battle for the presidency of the chamber. The emerging narrow majority is making it more difficult for former Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi as the chamber’s chief post. Because he relies on votes from both moderate Republicans and right-wing supporters of ex-President Donald Trump.

The presidency of the House of Representatives is decided by a vote of the entire chamber. McCarthy must first win the Republican nomination. On Monday, right-wing Republican congressman Andy Biggs announced in an interview with Newsmax that he wants to take on McCarthy. In contrast, influential Trump loyalists such as Marjorie Taylor Greene and Jim Jordan spoke out in favor of McCarthy.
