The UN General Assembly on Monday passed a resolution intended to lay a foundation for Russia’s future reparations to Ukraine. In New York, 94 countries voted in favor of the resolution, gaining the necessary two-thirds majority. 73 countries abstained, 14 voted against – in addition to Russia, including China, Iran and Cuba. The text asks Ukraine to record information about war damage in a kind of register. “The reparations that Russia must make for its actions are now part of the international legal reality,” Zelenskyy said.
“The Ukrainian military will not accept any negotiations, agreements or compromises,” Commander-in-Chief Zalushny wrote. He is credited with organizing the Ukrainian army’s successful resistance to the Russian invasion. His statements were aimed at a discussion that is taking place in the US, but also in other countries. The administration of President Joe Biden has made it clear that it will support Ukraine for as long and as strongly as necessary. Other voices advise not to rule out negotiations.
Milley, Saluschnjy’s interlocutor, said last week that if the front lines stabilize over the winter, there is a chance to negotiate an end to the conflict. In the face of military defeats, Russia reiterates its perceived willingness to negotiate. Despite losing territory, however, Russian troops still control almost a fifth of the neighboring country. “There is only one condition for negotiations: Russia must leave all occupied territories,” Zalushnyi wrote.
The head of the Kiev presidential office, Andriy Yermak, discussed the children kidnapped to Russia during an online conference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and G20 ambassadors. “Our goal is to stop the violent abduction or deportation of children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation,” Ermak said. Every effort must be made to bring these children back and reunite them with their families. The Russian army and the Russian authorities do confirm that children are being brought to Russia from Ukraine. They would be brought to safety from the combat zones or come to Russia for treatment or recovery.
Current events in the war in Ukraine in the live ticker:
Following Ukraine’s recapture of the city of Kherson, the US Department of Defense expects Russian troops to entrench themselves on the opposite eastern bank of the Dnipro River. Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers are on the east side of the river, a senior Pentagon official emphasized Monday. “Our current estimate is that they intend to keep this area under their control.” There is currently no evidence that Ukrainian units have crossed the river. On the eastern bank, the Russians control most of the Kherson region.
Ukraine honors political and journalistic supporters from abroad with Orders of Merit, including three journalists from Springer Verlag. The prize goes to “Welt” editor-in-chief Ulf Poschardt, deputy “Bild” editor-in-chief Paul Ronzheimer and the editor-in-chief of the political department “Bild”, Julian Röpcke. This is apparent from a decree issued by President Selenskyj. Journalists from Poland, Latvia, Italy and the US also received awards.
Russia’s war against Ukraine is also an important topic at the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali. According to a Western diplomat, it could go so far as to allow Moscow to accept a passage condemning the war in the final statement.
