Shortly before midnight on Monday evening, negotiators from the EU Parliament and Member States agreed that About 186 billion euros in 2023 can be planned, as Czech Deputy Finance Minister Jiří Georgiev has announced. If they had not reached an agreement by midnight, the European Commission would have had to submit a new budget proposal.
EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed the agreement. “Now is the time to boost our economy. To stay united,” Metsola wrote on Twitter shortly after the agreement.

I welcome the agreement on the EU budget for next year @Europarl_EN other @EUCouncil. Crucial for delivery on priorities.

More than a billion euros additional expenditure from the Community budget, including for the current crises the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the further recovery from the Corona crisissaid the budget committee in parliament.
Essentially, the negotiations revolved around how much money could be planned for 2022. The EU parliament had asked for €187.3 billion to be made available next year. The EU states wanted to provide slightly less: 183.95 billion. That was just below EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn’s proposal for €185.6 billion.
In order to implement the budget for 2023, the agreement still has to be ratified in a plenary session of the Parliament and by a Council of Ministers. However, this is considered a formality. (sda/dpa)
