Capitol Attack investigation to consider steps against Trump Capitol Attack investigation to consider steps against Trump

The US Capitol bombing commission is considering taking action against Donald Trump after the ex-president went to court against a subpoena.

Trump’s lawyers did not even try to negotiate terms for a statement, the House of Representatives committee said in a statement Monday. And Trump’s lawsuit is based on arguments repeatedly rejected by courts.

The committee therefore found that Trump refused to comply with the subpoena. His statement was requested on Monday. Trump’s lawyers filed a lawsuit this weekend. They argued, among other things, that the commission had no jurisdiction to compel him to testify. In the past, several ex-presidents have responded to subpoenas from Congress.

Donald Trump tried to reverse the results of a presidential election and prevent the transfer of power, MPs noted in their statement. The next steps in the lawsuit will be considered, including in light of his refusal to comply with the subpoena.

The House of Representatives can report Trump contempt of Congress after a vote in the Justice Department. The Department of Justice can then decide whether to take action. There were four such reprimands in the Capitol bombing investigation, the Justice Department took action in half of the cases, and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress.

The Commission of Inquiry is investigating the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol in Washington by Trump supporters. The then-president had previously stirred up crowds during a performance with false claims that his presidential election victory had been stolen by fraud. MPs will probably run out of time: from January, a narrow majority of Republicans will probably be in the House of Representatives, which probably means the end of the investigations. (sda/dpa)
