The official Swiss interim assessment of the UN climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, is mixed. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees on the agenda of the negotiations.

The same applies to the objective that all financial flows must be climate-friendly, the Federal Service for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK) announced on Sunday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. However, they are pleased that aid to the poorest countries in mitigating the damage caused by climate change is finally on the agenda.

Concrete decisions should be made in the second week, the UVEK emphasized. In the first week, the negotiations were demanding, but nevertheless constructive.

However, the positions are far apart, it was said. Emerging countries opposed concrete decisions about what individual states should do to reduce emissions.

The UVEK sees success mainly in the more technical areas. This applies, for example, to the use of satellites to record emissions. The importance of tipping points, where changes due to climate change become irreversible, was also recognized.

Under current plans, Environment Minister Simonetta Sommaruga will travel to the UN climate change conference on Wednesday. (sda)
