A revolutionary court in Iran has reportedly sentenced a protester to death over anti-system protests in the country. Five other people were sentenced to long prison terms. A “troublemaker” was sentenced to death on Sunday for setting fire to a state facility and endangering national security, judicial authorities said, according to a report by state news agency IRNA. Details of the convict were not given.
In addition, five other people were sentenced to between five and ten years in prison for administrative offenses and disturbance of public order. The judgments can therefore still be appealed. The death penalty in Iran is usually carried out by hanging. At least 314 people were executed in Iran last year, according to the human rights organization Amnesty International.
Human rights activists estimate nearly 15,000 protesters have been arrested during the protests, which have been going on for about two months. The government in Tehran has not confirmed these figures, nor has it given any others. At least 330 people have died in the protests, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) in the US.
