Ukraine Weekend Summary: Trump Sues Subcommittee Subcommittee for Capitol Attack

The recapture of Kherson, the regional capital of southern Ukraine, has sparked cheers and hopes for further progress in Ukraine. On the other side of the Dnipro, the Russian occupiers announced the evacuation of the reservoir city of Nowa Kakhovka. In addition, the grain agreement is coming to an end.

The weekend in Ukraine at a glance:

The situation in Kherson

A few days after the withdrawal of the Russian troops, representatives of the Ukrainian regional administration and security authorities returned to the liberated city of Kherson in the south of the country. For example, police and secret services have already resumed their work in Kherson, Governor Yaroslav Yanushch said in a video showing him in the center of the regional capital. One of the most important tasks at the moment, according to Januschewych, is to clear the area.

“We don’t forget anyone, we don’t leave anyone behind.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj promised this in a video message on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, the administration of the city of Nowa Kakhovka in Kherson is retreating with the residents of the city to a safe place, local crew chief Pavel Filipchuk said, according to Russia’s state news agency TASS. It is feared that the dam will be destroyed by shelling and the area could be flooded. Russians and Ukrainians have been accusing each other of planning such a provocation for weeks.

Russia reports minor successes in Donetsk

Meanwhile, Russian forces reported that they had taken a location in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Russian soldiers have taken the town of Majorsk near the town of Horliwka, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Sunday. Initially, there was no information from the Ukrainian side. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had already spoken in his video address on Saturday evening about the currently particularly violent Russian attacks in Donetsk. “It’s hell out there,” he said.

Russia and Iran keep getting closer

Kremlin chief Putin and Iranian President Raisi have discussed further expanding relations between the two countries hit by Western sanctions.

The call focused on “political, trade and business cooperation,” the Kremlin said afterwards. Iran has good relations with Moscow and has recently been criticized for supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. About a week ago, Tehran admitted for the first time that it had also supplied combat drones to Russia.

Schools must increase military preparedness

According to British estimates, the planned compulsory military training in Russian schools should increase the willingness of young people to mobilize and do military service. The training is designed to equip students approaching conscription age with military skills, the Defense Ministry said in London on Sunday, citing intelligence findings.

“This initiative is also likely part of a wider project to instill an ideology of patriotism and trust in public institutions to the Russian people.”

Barriers to fertilizer exports raised

“The world cannot afford to let global fertilizer availability problems lead to global food shortages”The UN announced Friday evening after talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and his delegation in Geneva.

Russia had questioned the continuation of the July grain deal that allowed Ukrainian exports through the Black Sea. The unhindered export of food and fertilizer from Russia was at the heart of the talks, along with an extension of the grain deal.

The focus is now on the grain agreement that expires next Saturday (November 19).which has enabled Ukrainian exports through the Black Sea since July. Moscow had blocked exports since the start of its war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia complains that Western sanctions are making it barely able to market its own exports of food and fertilizers on the world market. The United Nations called on countries around the world to remove obstacles to fertilizer exports from Russia.
