Hundreds of thousands of euros and ‘image damage’: so expensive were the punks for the island of Sylt British minister writes on Twitter about layoffs

They came with the 9 euro ticket: dozens of punks besieged Sylt for months. Apparently the island also got a hefty bill.

For weeks, punks lived in the city park in Westerland on the North Sea island of Sylt, after which their protest camp was evacuated by the police. The camp meant a lot of misery for the community of Sylt. Restaurant owners and hotel managers in particular complained about the island’s loss of image. And: The punks have made a lot of money for the community.

In a non-public newspaper to the members of the main committee, on which “shz.de” reports, at least some of the costs are listed in detail. The previously known items thus come to a total of 203,962 euros.

The lion’s share is therefore owed to the security service on behalf of the municipality: This cost at least 191,232 euros between 10 June and 30 September. This includes wages, travel costs and accommodation costs of employees.

Some costs generated by punks are still unknown

According to the report, another 6,553 euros is owed for the Dixi toilets that have been set up for the camp participants. The removal of the camp on the day of the eviction cost a little more than 500 euros, the purchase of the construction fence to demarcate the Stadtpark meadow on 12 October cost another 3,500 euros.

According to the report, there are also funds of more than 2,000 euros for work and vehicles on the construction site. But that is not everything.

On the “Dicken Wilhelmine”, the well-known fountain on Sylt, a “Punker-Pinkelmauer” was built and later demolished. Cost point: still unclear.

Mayor complains about image damage

The removal of waste and graffiti also entailed costs of an amount that has not yet been clarified. “In addition, we are still missing the numbers for the accommodation in the last week of the security service on Sylt,” said chief committee chairman Holger Flessau (CDU) on “shz.de”.

But the punks did not only actively provide costs: shopkeepers on the island complained about loss of turnover, the image damage also affected tourism after the end of the protest camp. “Many guests say they won’t come back,” Sylt Municipality Mayor Nikolas Häckel said in an interview with t-online. And he announced, “We are preparing an internal strategy so that nothing like this can happen again.”
