Republicans have had enough of Trump

US mid-term polls predicted a big win for Republicans. It is true that the party will probably take over the majority in the House of Representatives and perhaps also in the Senate. But: the expected red wave, which should sweep the blue Democrats against the wall, did not materialize. But why?

Experts agree: Donald Trump (76) is responsible for the failure of the red wave!

“Tonight’s results can be traced directly to Donald Trump,” a Republican strategist, who asked not to be identified, told The Independent newspaper. “If he hadn’t supported the extremely flawed candidates in the primaries, we would have had a fantastic night tonight. Instead, we are losing very winable races.”

Trump faces competition

For Claudia Brühwiler (40), US expert at the University of St. Gallen, the result is a sign that Trumpism is no longer a recipe for success for Republicans. This is evident, for example, from the successful re-election of Ron DeSantis (44) as governor in Florida, also known as “Trump with a brain”.

DeSantis openly distances himself from Trump and puts himself forward as the 2024 presidential candidate. Much to Donald Trump’s chagrin. He has already threatened DeSantis with unflattering revelations if he starts in two years.

According to Claudia Brühwiler, the poor quality of the Republican candidates is also responsible for the only moderately good result. Brühwiler about Blick: “Especially among the candidates for the Senate, there were some very polarizing figures.”

Republicans change course?

Vinz Koller (59), from Schaffhausen and emigrated to California, sees the result as a defeat for Trump. “His idea of the election lie apparently no longer appeals to voters who tip the scales in critical boroughs in the middle,” the expat told Blick.

Koller, who has already voted for US president three times as a Democratic representative from the Electoral College and is responsible for the Monterey County print election ads as a mail campaign manager in the current midterms, is watching the previously tough Trump front crumble.

Koller believes Republicans will now change course and gradually break away from Trump. And he is convinced: “The absence of the expected red wave is another nail in the coffin for Trump.”

Election campaign for 2024 begins

After the midterms, preparations for the presidential elections in two years will soon begin. Trump has said he will make “a big announcement” on November 15. Will he announce his renewed candidacy?

“If Trump is a candidate again, Biden will not develop a new candidate within the Democrats because he himself has the best chance against Trump,” said Claudia Brühwiler. “Only if the Republicans bring another candidate into the race will the Democrats in their ranks be able to shuffle the cards.”
