On average, gas storage facilities in Germany are now almost completely full. As shown by data from the Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) portal, the fill level has recently averaged 99.19 percent. By mid-October, the target level of 95 percent fill level for early November had already been reached.
There are still differences between the individual systems; a few are still below the 95 percent target. This also includes the main German warehouse in Rehden, which was recently filled to 92.5 percent.
The Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs has issued regulations on gas storage to guarantee energy supplies in winter. After the winter – before the beginning of February 2023 – an average filling level of 40 percent is still required.
Corrected for temperature, gas consumption in Germany has fallen sharply. According to a survey by the Berlin Hertie School, private households and small businesses consumed 36 percent less in September than would normally be expected. The industry reduced consumption by 19 percent. According to the research, companies started saving gas as early as September 2021 due to rising prices, households and smaller business customers are likely to start saving from March 2022.
