From a Chinese point of view, rich countries should deliver on their promise “as soon as possible” and provide $100 billion a year for climate policies in poorer countries. In addition, a roadmap should be presented on how to double the volume of the climate change adaptation fund, China’s climate commissioner Xie Zhenhua said in a speech published Wednesday by Chinese state media at the COP27 world climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Climate finance aims to support developing and emerging countries in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.

Extreme weather is causing serious damage on all continents, China’s top climate politician emphasized. In view of the current energy and food crisis, solidarity, multilateralism and cooperation are all the more “the only way out of the dilemma”.

The industrialized countries should also take the lead and step up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality in advance. Xie Zhenhua underlined the agreed principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, according to which rich countries should be held particularly accountable.

China will resolutely carry out its own goals, Xie Zhenhua said in Tuesday’s speech. For example, the most populous country has pledged to reach peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. With a share of around 30 percent (2020), the second largest economy is the largest producer of carbon dioxide in the world. About two-thirds of the energy in China is generated from coal.
