After days of waiting for the allocation of a port in Sicily, the rescue ship “Ocean Viking” has come 234 rescued migrants on board en route to France did. As the organization SOS Méditerranée announced on Tuesday evening, the French authorities have been asked to sail to a port. The vessel is expected to reach international waters off Corsica on Thursday.
France was urged to find a port where people can disembark as quickly as possible. Some of them have been on board the “Ocean Viking” for more than two weeks.
The Italian news agency Ansa reported that Marseille was preparing to open the port for the ship. According to Ansa, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the matter. The far-right politician and her new government want to crack down on non-governmental organizations and Mediterranean migrants.
The fact that such an extreme solution is now being sought is “the result of a critical and dramatic failure by all European countries to assist in the search for a safe haven,” according to SOS Méditerranée. Director Caroline Abu Sa’Da said: “The situation on board Ocean Viking has reached a critical point. We are now facing very far-reaching consequences, including the risk of loss of life.”
