Here’s what you need to know about the Midterms

Samuel Schumacher

Is the “red wave” coming? Or will the «blue wall» stand? Today’s midterms in the United States are about nothing less than control in Washington. One thing is almost certain: the House of Representatives (the “U.S. National Council”) will fall to the Republicans. In the case of the Senate (the “State Council of the USA”), the starting position is still so tight that it is difficult to make predictions.

What are the “midterms” about?

The midterm elections are the general elections in the US. They take place in the middle of President Joe Biden’s (79) first term. It is the turn of the entire House of Representatives (435 seats) and a third of the Senate (35 of the 100 seats). There are also numerous local elections and votes. 36 of the 50 states elect their governor (the local executive). In addition, several states are voting on whether the right to abortion should be included in the local constitution.

Which scenarios are conceivable?

First, Democrats can maintain their slim majority in the Senate and House of Representatives (the two chambers together make up “Congress”). Not much would change for US President Joe Biden. Second, the Democrats are losing control of the House of Representatives to the Republicans. In this way, Republicans could slow down Biden’s political agenda. In addition, they would have the option of instructing parliamentary committees to conduct political investigations. For example, they could launch an investigation against the president’s son, Hunter Biden, 52, who is controversial for his business activities. Third, the Democrats lose a majority in both chambers. Biden would be completely blocked. He would have little chance of filling vacant seats in the US Supreme Court, according to his taste.

What do the latest polls say?

The statisticians of the political portal “FiveThirtyEight” simulated 100 midterm elections on the computer. Republicans have won the House of Representatives 83 out of 100 and the Senate 55 out of 100. So while things seem clear in the great room, the race for the Senate remains extremely close. The wafer-thin races in Georgia and Pennsylvania will be decisive.

How important are the midterms to Joe Biden?

Mate. Biden must be prepared for two tough years in which Republicans will throw him almost insurmountable political hurdles. In all likelihood, he will become a “lame duck”. The tone in Washington is likely to get even more hateful.

What do the results mean for the 2024 presidential campaign?

If Republicans achieve a clear victory, Donald Trump (76) will take this as a sign and will announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election shortly. During several campaign appearances in recent days, the former Republican president has indicated that he is “tossing in his hat very, very, very quickly.”
